Alternative Naturalistic Theories #7: Flung in a Pit Alternative Naturalistic Theories to the Resurrection
Flung in
a Pit
This theory
states that Jesus was not buried but flung into a pit. First put forth by J.
Guignebert.
Problems:
1. This
theory is without basis, and disregards the clear and lengthy accounts of the
new testament, secular, and ecclesiastical literature of the first three
centuries. The accounts talk about the reverence many had for Jesus, the burial
preparations, the multiple visits to the tomb, the evangelical speeches given
in Acts, and other references to an empty tomb.
2. The resurrection
story swept like wildfire through the Roman Empire. Would so many people have
believed it if the body was in a pit and could not be proved to be missing?
