Alternative Naturalistic Theories #1: Legend Alternative Naturalistic Theories to the Resurrection
Legend
This theory
states that the existence of Jesus, or the stories of his resurrection, were
created years afterward.
Problems:
1. The life
and death of Jesus, documented in both Biblical and extra-Biblical documents,
is one of the best-attested series of historical facts of ancient history.
2. The new
testament documents were written within one lifetime following the death of
Jesus, when both proponents and opponents of the resurrection story were still
alive and presumably could dispute the affirmed events. I briefly discuss this HERE. The incredibly abundant
number of ancient copies of the new testament documents, as well as indications
written within the documents, suggests that the writings were widespread. I discuss this briefly HERE.
3. An early
formal creed is present in 1 Corinthians 15:3-5 or 3-7 that Dr. Gary Habermas
in a debate with the atheist (now agnostic) Dr. Antony Flew traces back to
within 3 or 4 years after Jesus’ crucifixion. (Habermas, G. & Flew, A. The
Resurrection Debate, New York NY: Harper Collins, 1987)
