Jesus' Burial

Jesus' Burial

Some Interesting Points:

1. Joseph of Arimathea was a secret follower of Jesus and member of the Sanhedrin who claimed Jesus’ body from Pilate. He and Nicodemus, another follower and Sanhedrin member, wrapped the body in long linen strips and about 75 pounds of spices. This was typical for Jewish burial customs in the first century. When they were finished preparing the body they rolled a rock in front of the tomb.

2. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary observed where the body was laid.

3. The Jewish leaders remembered the statement of “3 days” (this is the term that came up in the trial as remembered by Jesus’ enemies). They were afraid that the disciples would steal Jesus’ body and then claim he had risen from the dead. They put a seal on the tomb, and placed guards in front to prevent anyone from being able to steal the body.
